I am a political scientist with research interests in political geography, urban politics and policy, the politics of race and ethnicity (REP), elections and political parties, and American Political Development (APD). Since 2002, I have been conducting and sharing policy-relevant research in academic, non-profit, advocacy, political, and corporate settings. I’m the author of the award-winning book The Cities on the Hill: How Urban Institutions Transformed National Politics (Oxford University Press), and my research and commentary have appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, Du Bois Review, Journal of Politics, American Political Science Review, MSNBC, Televisa, WTTW-Chicago, public radio, and other outlets. I am the lead researcher and coordinator of Co-Lab Research, and the co-Founder and Head of Data Science at 2040 Strategy Group. I am also a visiting scholar at the Center for Urban Research at CUNY, and co-Director the Chicago Democracy Project. I have previously held scholarly appointments at CUNY’s Advanced Research Collaborative, Princeton’s Center for the Study of Democratic Politics, the École Urbaine / Centre d’Études Européennes at Sciences Po, Northwestern’s Department of Political Science (and Urban Studies), and Syracuse University’s Department of Political Science.
